Affair of Katharine and the patient
Katharine doesn't want to leave her husband because he'd be mad and when she stays with him he'll stay with her forever and she doesn't believe in the english patient's faith and in his endless love.
break-up: heartbreaking for both of them
They don't tell each other
He is completely in love with her.

The woman has to decide and she chooses her husband because it's the easier way out for her. It hurts her a lot and it also hurts the patient
Liked it a lot because it's a love story <333

Chapter III
A saper while defusing a bomb
Florence - near this city is the villa
sikh sapper named Kip appears. Sikh is his religion. sapper means someone that's making bombs secure so that they can't explode anymore. He is from India and lives in a tent in the garden because he's working on making the area safe. He also takes showers in the fountain and Hana likes to watch him.

Hana is in the villa playing the piano --> Kip freaks out because he's scared that there would be a bomb in it. his worries turn out unnessecary because it's safe.
Hana runs out to help him when he needs help and they defuse the bomb together. While they are both exhausted they first get closer to each other.
A noise is interrupting while the people living in the villa are enjoying their evening in the house, Hardy, who had also been a sapper died while trying to defuse a bomb - kip claims that it wasn't a bomb and that there's nothing to worry about -
Kip leaves after a while Hardy
Kip comes back, wants to talk to Hana in privacy --> the english patient's hearing aids are being removed
Caravaggio doesn't like the thought of hana being in love with a half-dead person so he tries to convince her of the advantages Kip has compared to the English patient.
She spends the night with him.
p. 27 - 43 - II In Near Ruins
The beginning of the 2nd chapter takes place in Rome and tells the story about a man with bandaged hands, also named "the war hero". He worked as a spy for the allies in the war.
Conversation between the patient and a doctor: About the nurse and how she still lives in the ruin with the english patient. The patient with the bandaged hands seems to worry about her and wants to go and find her. The doctor answers to the questions "Where did he come from" really detailed and then the conversation ends with a "Thank you" and the patient walks outside.
He travels to the ruin and it was a hard journey ==> She's really important to him.
Then his name is mentioned --> Caravaggio
On p. 32 the nurse's name is mentioned for the first time: Hana.
Her and Caravaggio talking by the fountain about things like love and life.
He's worried about her because of the unexploded bombs that could be in the area where she lives.
She's worried that they won't have enough food when he'll stay there.
p. 36: Description of Caravaggio's job as a spy: party - film - mistress of the general
p. 40: english patient, someone looking ruined. hana and English patient talking about the war.
My own opinion:
> boring
> no motivation to read further
> interested in the main story but not in all those little stories from the past that are kind of unnessesarry and annoying
> Why the heck are they eating SANDWICHS at the end of the chapter!?! really weird...

p. 7 - 23
On page 9 & 10 it's told how the people in the desert heel with oil and mix all those little bottles together and know how to do it very well. They helped the burned patient and saved his life.
The nurse then reads to the english patient. They are living in a ruin because the nurse decided that the english patient can't be moved again and that she wants to stay with him. She repaired what she needed to, like the stairs with piles of books. A lot of rooms didn't have walls, so they were wet and windy without shelter. But in the summer the sun could come in and dry all the wet beds and walls.Description of the ruined house that used to be used as a hospital and now has only a few beds left.
"From outside the place seemed devestated" That protecs them from enemies because no one would think that anyone lived in this place.
She plants vegetables in the garden so that they have things to eat.
She plays games with chalk like a little child to keep herself busy.
She reads to the english patient from a book where he took notes in during his journey. The book describes the nature, the wind and the air.
Then there's a convesation in the darkness and again a part of the book on p. 18.
On page 23 the chapter ends with a desription of the nurse washing herself.
I like this chapter although i was really sceptical about it in the beginning but I like the people and i can feel with them.

First Chapter - Opinion
I think the first chapter is at first really hard to understand. Often the person telling switches and there are no signs for it, so it's kind of hard to figure that out. Also it's a little bit confusing to figure out the English Patient's past and why he is there. In this part of writing there are also so many jumps in time and teller which makes it harder to read and complicated to understand.
The summary of the rest of the 1 chapter will be online soon ;) I just need to figure out a structure for it first... ;)
